The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.

Tropical storm Harvey overwhelmed first responders in Texas and businesses are stepping in to help. One of those is Gallery Furniture. A chain of furniture stores in Houston. Jim McIngvale, also known as Mattress Mack is the company’s owner.

“When the hurricane first hit down here, my thought was this is going to be a one-day event. When I came into work the next day, and I saw the devastation of the entire area and decided it would be best if we opened this 100,000-square-foot furniture store as a shelter. And we have another furniture store in west Houston, so we opened both stores as shelters. And now we have about 400 people that are living in both of these furniture stores, trying to get back on their feet.”

Jim embodies many of the principles that we share with our readers, and as a reader of this blog I could not help but highlight his leadership in action. Here is a recent interview published by NPR that shines the light on how one CEO, Mattress Mack, is taking on the task of building a community from the ground up.
